Who is a Big?

A Big is a volunteer mentor who is matched in a one-to-one relationship with a child (Little) in our program. A mentor is a friend, a supporter, a positive and consistent addition to the life of a Little. Our Bigs come from diverse backgrounds. They are regular people, just like you. You don’t need any special degrees or job skills. You just have to want to positively impact a young person. Role models come in all shapes and sizes, and you could be a perfect fit.

When do I see my Little?

Matches in our Community-based program spend time together 2-4 times a month, getting together and sharing mutually enjoyable activities. We recommend that you keep a consistent schedule of outings and get together on a regular basis. We ask volunteers to commit to the match for a minimum of 1 full year. Many of our matches however choose to continue for much longer; some until the Little exits the program at 19 years of age. 

What do typical outings look like?

As a Big/Little team, you work together to come up with outing ideas. Perhaps share an activity that gives you something in common to talk about or try something new together! Activities can range from walks in the park, arts and crafts, going to the movies, cooking together, etc. Bigs contact the Little's guardian to get approval for the activity and to schedule a visit. Activities should be free or inexpensive so the focus is on relationship development. Your Match Specialist will be happy to help you come up with ideas too!

What support can I expect from Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Twin Tiers?

Once matched, Bigs will work with parents/guardians and agency staff to ensure that all parties are growing and thriving within the match. Any time you are unsure about what to do or how to handle a situation, you will have a Match Support Specialist to help. They’ll help you with ideas for activities, guidance for handling any new or challenging situations, and provide feedback on how you are making a difference.

Safety first.

Big Brothers Big Sisters conducts a thorough background check on every volunteer in our program. In addition, every relationship is closely monitored and supported by a professionally trained Match Specialist who will maintain monthly communication with Big, Little and their parent/guardian. ​These conversations are intended to provide support and positive feedback, gather information about activities, relationship development and the safety and well-bring of all involved.

What Next?

Step 1: Apply

Step 2: Interview and Training

​The next step is to meet with a BBBS match specialist. We’ll get to know you better so we can identify a Little that will be a great fit. This is also an important time for you to learn more about the program, your role in the relationship, and we can answer any questions you may have.

Step 3: References and Background Checks

​Part of making a great match means getting advice from your friends, co-workers and family. They provide great insight to our matching process. As always, we do complete a number of state and national background checks to honor our parents’ trust in our process.

Step 4: Training & Matching

​Once the above steps are complete, we begin identifying a Little Brother or Little Sister based on compatibility. You will complete required trainings and we will discuss the Little we believe to be a great fit with you. Then, we will set a time for an introduction to your new Little and their family.

Step 5: Ongoing Support

Once you meet your Little, you will begin making plans to meet with your Little in the community. Your Match Specialist will provide ongoing support to make sure the relationship is developing in a healthy and positive direction. When talking to your Match Specialist, feel free to share successes with your Little(s)! It is also important to voice any concerns you may have to allow your Match Specialist to make recommendations or take action to fix any issues; this allows for a lasting, fun, and impactful relationship between you and your Little(s).
